Second opinion after a cancer diagnosis in Sweden
This page is for you if you have received a cancer diagnosis in Sweden and want another specialist to review the diagnosis or the proposed treatment. Unlike most of the situations covered elsewhere on this site, this is one where the law is on your side directly — and where the practical question is speed rather than entitlement.
Quick answer
Cancer can qualify for the statutory right to a new medical assessment under chapter 8, section 1 of the Swedish Patient Act. The right applies when the disease or injury is life-threatening or particularly serious, so the individual medical situation still matters rather than the diagnosis alone settling it. Where it applies, the assessment may be obtained inside or outside your own region and does not depend on your treating doctor agreeing that it is warranted. The practical considerations are timing and routing: ask your treating team or contact nurse early, use the term ny medicinsk bedömning, and ask what the timing implications are for your specific diagnosis.
Speak to your treating team first. In cancer care, timing is part of the medicine. Whatever else you do, tell the team or your contact nurse that you are considering a second assessment and ask what the timing implications are for your diagnosis. Do not let reading — here or anywhere — delay that conversation.
Why this situation is different
Most pages on this site have to explain that the statutory right does not apply. Here it may well. Chapter 8, section 1 of the Patient Act provides:
En patient med livshotande eller särskilt allvarlig sjukdom eller skada
ska få möjlighet att inom eller utom den egna regionen få en ny
medicinsk bedömning.
Cancer is the example most often given of a condition that meets that description, and 1177 cites it as such. It is not, however, an automatic classification: the test in the section is whether the disease or injury is life-threatening or particularly serious, and that remains an assessment of your individual medical situation. Where the section does apply, two consequences follow. The right does not depend on your treating doctor agreeing that a further assessment would add anything. And it explicitly extends beyond your own region — your home region cannot confine a qualifying assessment to its own clinics.
The most effective way to ask
- Start with your kontaktsjuksköterska — the contact nurse assigned to you. They know the local process and can move it faster than a general inbox.
- Use the statutory term: ny medicinsk bedömning. It is the phrase the system recognises.
- Say what you want reviewed — the diagnosis, the pathology, or the treatment plan. These go to different specialists.
- Ask what the timing considerations are for your specific diagnosis, and note the answer.
- Request your records and imaging in parallel, so the assessing team is not waiting on paperwork.
What this page deliberately does not contain
No survival figures, no prognosis, no comparison of treatments. Those are specific to your diagnosis, your staging and your own circumstances, and group statistics read as individual predictions do more harm than good in this setting. What this page is for is the route: knowing that the right exists, that it reaches beyond your region, and who to ask.
How Andrabedomning.se fits in
Andrabedomning.se is an independent Swedish patient guidance service. You describe your situation in a request — in English — and a person reads it and replies, normally within one working day, with information about relevant specialist contact. If we cannot help, you get an explanation of why and where to turn instead. We do not diagnose or provide medical care. Records go directly to the care provider, never to us.
Sending a request is free and commits you to nothing. If we can coordinate a suitable specialist contact, two amounts are disclosed to you in writing before anything is booked: our coordination fee (samordningsavgift), which is our only source of revenue, and the specialist's fee, which is set by the care provider and paid directly to them. We take no commissions or referral fees from specialists or clinics. How it works in full →
Andrabedomning.se coordinates the contact. The medical assessment is made by the specialist and care provider you choose.
Frequently asked questions about a second opinion after a cancer diagnosis
Does the statutory right apply to a cancer diagnosis?
Cancer can qualify. The legal right in chapter 8, section 1 of the Patient Act applies when the disease or injury is life-threatening or particularly serious, so the individual medical situation still matters and it is not automatic for every cancer diagnosis. Where it does apply, you can invoke it directly rather than relying on choice of provider or private care, and it explicitly extends to an assessment outside your own region.
Will asking for one delay my treatment?
It is the right question to ask, and to ask your treating team rather than the internet. In some cancers the interval that matters is short and a second assessment must be arranged quickly or not at all; in others there is more room. Tell the team you are considering it and ask directly what the timing implications are for your specific situation. A team that knows you are asking can usually help it happen faster than you can alone.
How do I ask without it becoming a conflict?
Say it plainly and early: you would like a new medical assessment under chapter 8, section 1, and you would like help arranging it. In cancer care this is routine and expected; multidisciplinary team review is already built into how treatment decisions are made. Framing it as a request for help rather than as a challenge tends to get it organised rather than debated.
What is a contact nurse and can they help with this?
A kontaktsjuksköterska is a named contact nurse assigned to cancer patients, whose role includes coordination and being reachable through the pathway. For a request like this they are usually the most effective person to start with — they know the local process for arranging an assessment elsewhere and can move it faster than a message into a general inbox.
Can I get a second opinion on the pathology rather than the treatment plan?
Yes, and the two are different requests. A re-examination of the tissue diagnosis is done by a pathologist and is a well-established practice where the diagnosis is unusual or the finding borderline. A review of the treatment plan is done by the treating specialty. Say which you are asking for, because they go to different places.
Does Andrabedomning.se handle cancer cases?
Andrabedomning.se coordinates contact and does not carry out assessments of any kind. For a cancer diagnosis the fastest route is usually through your existing care pathway, where the statutory right applies and a contact nurse can arrange it. If you want help thinking through the options, you can describe your situation to us — but do not let contacting us delay speaking to your treating team.
