Can I get medical care in Sweden without a personnummer?
Yes. Emergency care is provided to anyone regardless of status. Private care is available to anyone who pays the provider's fee. What a personnummer, or registration with a region, primarily unlocks is subsidised patient fees within publicly funded care and the administrative infrastructure around it — booking systems, digital records access, and the high-cost ceiling.
What is a samordningsnummer and does it help?
A coordination number is issued by the Swedish Tax Agency to people who are not registered as resident but need an identifier for dealings with Swedish authorities. It solves some administrative problems — being identifiable in a provider's system — but it is not the same as being registered in a region, and it does not by itself confer entitlement to subsidised care.
I have an EHIC card. What does that cover?
A European Health Insurance Card entitles you to medically necessary care during a temporary stay in Sweden, on the same fee terms as a resident. It is for care that cannot reasonably wait until you return home. It is not intended for care you travelled to Sweden to receive, and a planned second opinion generally falls outside it.
Can I log in to 1177 without a personnummer?
Generally no, because the digital services rely on Swedish e-identification, which in turn depends on a personnummer. That has a practical consequence for second opinions: you cannot read your own records digitally and must request them from providers in writing instead. Start that earlier than you otherwise would.
Will a private provider actually see me?
Normally yes. From the provider's side the question is how the invoice is settled, not what your registration status is. Say what your situation is when you first make contact so that billing and any insurance route are clear before the appointment rather than at the desk afterwards.
What should I have ready?
Photo identification; documentation of any coverage you hold, such as an EHIC or an S1/S2 form or private insurance details; and your existing medical material — the diagnosis or recommendation in writing, imaging reports with dates, and what has already been tried. If your records are held outside Sweden, request them early, because cross-border requests are slower.
